Guide to getting started in fly – Part 2

The water speaks to you as it rushes by. It babbles, “Trout are in my midst!”

An early morning mist rises in columns in the pool below you, just a few yards down river. The moisture in the air conveys a fecund smell to your chilled nose – is it an aromatic clue that your quarry is nearby, or is it just the fresh remains of a mound of crayfish carcasses picked clean by raccoons on a nearby bank. Are those elongated shadows in the water merely rocks? What is it that breaks the surface every once in a while – do your eyes play tricks on you – is it simply an inconsistent riffle Read the rest of this entry »

Video games: To buy or to rent

I have been playing video games most of my life. I have 3 kids who are deeply into them as well. That includes a two year old who loves his older brothers Nintendo DS Lite. So we, strike that reverse it, Santa got him a Nintendo DS Lite for Christmas. He has about four games and still plays some of his older siblings games as well, pretty deftly for a two year old, I might add. We also have two PS 2’s in the house. An older model and the smaller, newer one. In addition we have an X-Box and an X-Box 360 to boot. I spend most of my limited time playing NCAA College Football 2008 for PS2. When Read the rest of this entry »

Satellite TV Software Brings TV from Around the World to Your PC

Did you know that you can watch TV on your computer? I’m not talking about YouTube, or going on the homepage of VH1 to watch deleted clips. I’m talking about using satellite TV software to watch TV on your computer screen and getting thousands of television channels available on your computer via your internet connection.

Whether you are just sick of watching the same old reruns over and over on TV, think your cable company is trying to take over the world (and charging you way too much in doing so), or fed up with a satellite signal that falls out every time it rains, satellite TV software could be an alternative worthy of your consideration.

Humor: Travel – Part 2

JetBlue circa 1971

Last week I got a call from my mom. She wanted to book flights to Ft. Myers for her and my dad. Actually, I should rephrase that: she wanted me to book flights to Ft. Myers for her and my dad. She calls me her personal travel agent which is ironic because her second born child, my sister Kirsten is,for all intents and purposes, a travel agent. But since the zodiac aligns or because I am a weaker personality, my patience lasts longer than some would recommend is healthy and I can withstand the 72 minute phone conversation that ensues. Granted, as I sit at my laptop in my studio apartment I stifle some laughter and roll my Read the rest of this entry »

Turkey to Northern Cyprus Water Pipeline by 2012

A Multi-million-dollar undersea pipeline designed to bring water to North Cyprus from Turkey could be up and running by 2012.

As there has been a period of water shortage, President Demetris Christofias, the internationally-recognised Greek Cypriot leader, is presently trying to supply the southern part of the divided island through tankers bringing water from Greece.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said work on the 110km plastic pipeline scheme would start in June 2009.

“The project should be completed at the latest within three years beginning in June next year (2009),” the PM told a news conference in Nicosia alongside Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. “The (Turkish) government has given the necessary instructions to the environment ministry Read the rest of this entry »

Recipes: Cooking venison and other meats from the wild

I remember my days as an avid meat eater, especially, wild game. I recall dressing out my first deer in 1967, cooking my first squirrel in 1952 and the many years in the late 50’s and early 60’s of cooking all sorts of wild quail, partridges, pheasants, turkeys, caribou, elk, moose and alligator. I have even eaten rack of lion at the Explorer’s club!

Most American’s are meat eaters. However, they much prefer McDonalds Burgers to other exotic things such as mentioned above.

One of my newsletter readers requested some venison recipes after I described the delicious venison dinner, my daughter-in-law Pam, provided one weekend. This article contains two of old recipes I have used over Read the rest of this entry »

Product reviews: Bonide Fungonil fungicide concentrate

Six years ago, I planted four Indian Hawthorn bushes in my backyard. The very next year, all four bushes became infected with a fungus that caused black spot disease. I quickly tripped down to my neighborhood Lowe’s and bought the fungicide the helpful associate suggested. It worked. At least, that year and the next it did. By the third year, though, the product I was using was requiring more applications to control the disease. This year, I applied it five consecutive weeks and it didn’t help at all. My bushes were losing leaves faster than I could gather them up.

After a bit of research, I learned that the fungus (a species of Bipolaris, if you’re interested) develops resistance to a Read the rest of this entry »
